In 1984 after experimenting with various short films Buddy Giovinazzo’s debut feature American Nightmares slowly crawled its way into the sub-basement underground of fringe cinema. The film would quickly establish itself as a shockingly grim depiction of a Vietnam vet who’s downward spiral takes the viewer on an unforgettable nihilistic journey to unimaginable depths of horror. The film would eventually find itself in the distribution ranks with legendary low budget maniacs Troma Entertainment who would retitle the film as Combat Shock. Self described by Buddy as Eraserhead meets Taxi Driver, Combat Shock continues to hold its own within the realm of no-budget truly shocking films of the 80’s and still causes walk-outs during screenings.
